JANUARY 2019 NEWSLETTER – People:

Engaging and Motivating

Happy New Year!  Let’s do this.  Dive into 2019 and make it great.

Hi Troy,

Our newsletters this year will go a little more in depth.  Every quarter we’ll have a series in which we’ll focus on different aspects of one topic.  The First Quarter is…PEOPLE!!  You told us people is a main concern.  We hear you.

ENGAGING AND MOBILIZING PEOPLE:

Getting people on board.  Achieving buy-in.  Keeping the motivation going.  Does this sound familiar?  These tend to be problems every business owner has.

What to do?  Well, 99% of engaging and motivating is FREE.  So read on…

Engage people if you expect them to be engaged – make goals known, demonstrate by doing (be the spark – if you’re checked out, they will be too).  Some people just don’t take initiative, and if they’re going along in their vacuum without any direction, they won’t mobilize themselves.  Remember, they can’t read your mind.  Many people do very well when assigned tasks with clear goalposts and scheduled check-ins.

Connect inexperienced with experienced.

Knowing when someone doesn’t have the skills they need to properly engage and giving them a mentor, training and support is what great leaders do.  Put the talent you have to work for you.

Many want to be challenged, not just get a paycheck.  And others enjoy teaching.

Celebrate successes – motivation is lost when people don’t feel their efforts are recognized.

Feedback is key.  Let your staff know when they’ve done well, and redirect when things get off course, or when you feel it is needed.

Again, as far as we know, mind reading doesn’t exist – communicate!  And one of the biggest keys to happy, loyal, engaged and motivated employees is being heard and feeling valued.

Ask questions.  Get your staff to reiterate your goals back to you.  It’s a little like a game of telephone sometimes, and you want to make sure they understand your vision.  Find out where they may be lacking – this is where pairing with someone else comes in handy for some.  Asking questions might also lead you to determine that someone works better alone.

Make sure the environment is suited to the tasks.  You can’t outperform your environment!  You can’t golf in a swimming pool.

Ask how you can help and what tools, assistance or direction you can give to make the environment just right.

Your organizational structure needs to be, well, organized – in its entirety, from A to Z.  Your results will reflect the planning, preparation and strategy you put in.

COACH'S CHALLENGE

Right now, by far the biggest challenge I have been working on with my coaching clients is around engaging and mobilizing the people on their team to increase performance and productivity.

So, here’s your challenge for this month:
First off, a key part of improving engagement is shifting from generic thinking to specific thinking.  Whenever a client mentions to me that they want improved productivity from their team, I typically ask the following types of questions: “Who, specifically do you want to see improve their productivity?”  “What specifically would you like to see them do differently?”  “Why, specifically, are you concerned about their performance?”

I work to move them from generalities to specifics.  Specifically who?  Specifically what?  Specifically why?

You get the idea.  It’s hard to be effective at improving performance on a general level.  Each person has a different motivation, desire, and performance influencer.  It is much easier and more effective to get results by addressing a specific challenge with a specific person.

So, your challenge this month to help you improve the engagement and performance of your team is to get specific.
  • Who are the specific team members you would like to see improve their engagement and performance?
  • What are their specific issues with engagement?
  • What is the priority to address and discuss with each?
Once you have these answers we can then work on defining the specific solutions.

Hi - It's Jill here!

I hope you all had Happy Holidays and maybe a little rest before embarking into 2019!

Very few of us can probably say we didn't overeat, snack on too many cookies, eat too much pie.  Which brings me to this month's "Give Back Corner" focus - Hungry Kids.

None of us want to see kids going to school hungry, but the truth of the matter is that Food Insecurity reaches every county in our Nation.

No Kid Hungry

There are many ways to give, including patronizing participating restaurants in their Dine Out for No Kid Hungry program.  Check it out!

As always, please feel free to reach out to me at any time with questions or needs.
