JUNE 2018 NEWSLETTER – Teachers, Mentors and Coaches

“A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops.”

                                                                                                            ~Hippocrates

Hi Troy,

The kids are getting out of school.  Can you believe it’s that time of year already?  This made us ponder the question – Who was your favorite Teacher, Mentor or Coach?  We all have at least one of these leaders in our lives who impacted us forever.  Maybe it was someone from your childhood who gave you direction, maybe it was someone who mentored you to find your passion and become the person you are today.  Without a great business coach, many of us wouldn’t have found success in our chosen careers.  We all need someone like this.

Take a minute to think about the one thing your favorite teacher, mentor or coach taught you.  It’s probably something you carry with you still - something indelible and unshakable which you turn to again and again.  Good advice can do that.  And like Hippocrates said, you also build upon that, and their influence never stops.

A mentor is a trusted counselor or guide who offers their knowledge, wisdom and advice to help someone with less experience.  Business coaches help you create plans to work toward your goals and achieve your objectives.  Both of these people are highly useful to finding success.  A mentor gives advice and a coach helps you get results.

Have you ever been a mentor for someone else?

The old adage of “give and you shall receive” is true here too.

You will probably be surprised at what you get in return.

We’d love to hear from you about either what you got from a teacher, mentor or coach, or what you got by being one.

COACH'S CHALLENGE

In honor of my birthday month. Take a break. Focus on having some fun.

Doesn’t really sound like the theme of a challenge does it? Doesn’t it sound a bit more like a reward?

I realized a few years ago that one of the values I gained from my coaches was the permission to rest. When I was younger and played on a team, the coach subbed us out when we got tired.  If left up to me, I would just keep playing. We all know performance goes down when we are tired.

But in the entrepreneur world it’s not typically accepted to think about resting…even though we need it.

I remember back in my crossfit days, one particular workout I was doing where I had to lift a bar over my head 10 times, then do a bunch of pull ups, then jump ropes, and keep repeating the process for what felt like eternity. After one round I felt my shoulder get a little sore. My coach, being a good coach, stopped me before I started my next round of lifting the bar. He asked if my shoulder was bugging me. Being a tough guy, I wasn’t going to make a big deal out of it. You know, “No pain no gain” right? So I downplayed it a bit and he just stopped me, “Look, you can push it, tear your shoulder, and be out for 6 months. Or, scale back, do what is safe and come back tomorrow.”

I really didn’t want to scale back. Everyone else was finishing the workout as prescribed. I felt like I was being a wuss. But, it was the right thing to do.

Sometimes we need to force the break. Even when it doesn’t seem like you have the time or can afford the break, it’s still necessary. This is what I’ve used my coaches for a lot over the years…permission to rest.

So…my challenge to you for this month is to take a break from the grind. Do something fun that you wouldn’t normally do.

Then tell me about it. I’m giving you permission.
You can blame me. And if anyone asks, just say, “Coach Troy said I could.”
